Q: What’s the best way for someone to get started in the makerspace?
Nunez: Come on in! You don’t need to have everything figured out before visiting OriginLabs. Whether you have a rough idea or are just curious about what you can build, we’re here to help. We can start with a tour of the space to help you discover the tools, resources, and training that best fit your project and answer any questions. Schedule a time to stop by.
Q: Do you need prior experience to use OriginLabs?
Nunez: Not at all. One of the biggest misconceptions about our space is that you need experience before you walk through the door, but that’s not true. OriginLabs was built for makers of all experience levels, from complete beginners to experienced fabricators. So whether you’ve been building for years or have never picked up a tool before, we’re here to guide you, answer questions, recommend resources, and help you get started.
Q: What surprises first-time users most about the space?
Nunez: Most first-time visitors are surprised by the variety of equipment and resources available. We have dedicated spaces for woodworking, metalworking, and additive manufacturing, along with the training and support to help people confidently use them. And, our resources are for everyone, no Penn State affiliation required.
Q: What’s the first tool or skill you usually recommend beginners learn?
Nunez: It really depends on the project and the materials you’re working with, but for someone with no prior experience, I usually recommend starting with hand tools. We have a wide selection in both our woodworking and metalworking labs, and they’re a great way to build confidence, learn basic techniques, and start bringing your ideas to life.
Q: How important is training before starting a project?
Nunez: Training is an essential first step. Before using any equipment, every user completes a free tool training specific to the machines they want to use. These hands-on trainings help ensure everyone feels confident using the equipment safely and successfully. You don’t need a membership to sign up. See our availability.
Q: What should someone bring with them for their first visit?
Nunez: Please You are required to wear appropriate shop attire. This includes long pants, short sleeves, and shoes that encase the entire foot (no crocs or sandals). Long hair should be tied back away from your face and you should remove any jewelry. Apart from that, just bring your ideas!
Q: What makes OriginLabs different from other makerspaces?
Nunez: OriginLabs is a state of the art facility encompassing 7,000 square feet of space and with over one million dollars worth of equipment for various fabrication needs in the interest of product and prototyping development. We were created to assist entrepreneurial endeavors, businesses, and startups with product and prototyping development, but we welcome all making projects, whether you are a student, staff member, or a member of the community.
Q: What’s your advice for someone who feels intimidated walking into the shop?
Nunez: If you haven’t been around tools before, we recognize that walking into a space like ours can be daunting. But if you are willing to give it a shot, you might be surprised at what you can build. Let us show you how.
